Today’s Lesson: Zero-Click Content

In today’s digital world, everything is measured in clicks. We monetize with clicks, we measure performance, engagement, and success with clicks (that’s right, even this newsletter benchmarks with clicks!). That being said, it has become harder than ever to get that sought-after click.

Roughly 2/3 of Google searches end without a click, and the reason is quite simple. People want answers to their problems quickly and easily, and Google has made that possible. Now, when you look up “how tall is Ryan Reynolds?” the results are more useful than ever because you can get the answer to your questions in the snippet above the various website links below.

(That’s 6’2 in the U.S.)

Links are clunky - there’s a reason why Instagram doesn’t allow it in their captions and why Snapchat and Tiktok keep links at a minimum. More importantly, no one wants to leave the app they’re on to go to a secondary website. Google and other platforms chose to sacrifice their visibility into consumer behavior (in the form of clicks) by opting for a method that better serves their audience - that is, zero-click content.

But, the question remains: how do you optimize your engagement and increase sales in a world where consumers won’t click on your product? The solution is to provide zero-click content of your own. As frustrating as it is to fly blind when advertising on these channels, perhaps there is something to be learned from the predicament. Are we embedding links for the benefit of our consumers? Or is it just a clunky tactic to generate insights? Rather than harvesting click data for our own insights, it would make sense to provide content as clearly and effectively as possible for our consumers. Amanda Natividad outlines the methodology behind zero-click content below:

“Giving the juiciest information upfront, earning engagement so the algorithm rewards your post, and building enough goodwill that your audience remembers you next time, seeks you out later, follows you on the platform, or even clicks on your profile to go find your call-to-action.” - Amanda Natividad, Sparktoro

Although it may seem to make more sense to gatekeep the most relevant information behind a click wall to get more clicks, that method is actually the result of misaligned incentives. The end goal of selling your product is not getting a click - it is selling the product! Given that, why wouldn’t we make our most relevant, sought-after content as accessible as possible? We see this tactic used in all sorts of media from movie trailers to podcast teasers. The key is to figure out which elements of your product are most important to your audience. From there, put that information front and center, and you should soon see your sales begin to climb.
